Performance Evaluation for Selective Cell Discard Control in ATM Network

Abstract(in English) In transport-layer protocols such as TCP over ATM networks, a packet is discarded when one or more cells are lost in that packet, and the destination node requires its source to retransmit that corrupted packet. Therefore, once a cell constituting a packet is lost, its subsequent cells in the corrupted packet are not worth relaying within the network. The selective cell discard control in the switches does not relay such worthless cells, but discard them. This enables us to use network resources efficiently. In this paper, we treat Tail Dropping (TD) method and Early Packet Discarding (EPD) one as selective cell discarding control, and analyze packet loss probability based on the system applying TD and/or EPD.
