A study on voice-band signal processing in private ATM network

Abstract(in English) This report describes the result of study on the technical subjects of voice-band signal processing in the realization of private telephony network using ATM technologies with the survey of movements in telecommunications standardization. Firstly, the technical consideration concerned with low bit-rate coding of speech in ATM applications are discussed on following four aspects; (1) synchronous resetting of speech encoder and decoder at the top of talk spurts, (2) relationship between coding frame period and assembly cycle of ATM cell, (3) compensation scheme for the loss of ATM cells, (4) encoded data mapping into the ATM cells. Secondly, the elemental technologies for silence elimination, including the recent technical trends in mobile telecommunications, are reviewed. Finally, the handling of voice-band data signals, mainly on facsimile signal, is discussed.
