Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In entropy coding algorithms, such as Huffman coding, bit operations with variable word lengths are frequently used.Although existing DSPs can perform numerical processing efficiently due to their pipeline processors, bit operations in entropy coding are a heavy burden to DSPs because of a mismatch between these bit operations and their pipeline processors. We propose a new approach to implement a full programmable entropy CODEC with amphibious logic system, which is a combination of a high-level design LSI-CAD system and FPGAs(Field Programmable Gate Array). By using this method, high performance for entropy coding and a full programmability are attained simultaneously.Huffman encoder of JPEG image coding algorithm is actually designed based on the amphibious logic to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
