Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The most computationally challenging aspect of video compression is the task of motion estimation. As quality, compression ratio, and resolution rise, the complexity of real time motion estimation(RTME) explodes geometrically. The only way to realize the incredible throughputs reqttired for RTME is by parallelization, whichin,in the case of RTME for HDTV,is still prohibitively expensive.Optical computing represents the extreme of parallelization.Convolutions can be carried out virtually instantaneously in the space or the spatial frequency domain.Complex image processing algorithms such as pattern matching have been implementable with very simple optical devices for some time now.In this paper we propose various implementations of RTME that takd advantage of the amazing potential of optical processors.
