Abstract(in English) High-definition visual communication is considered one of the most promising applications of ATM networks in the near future. To investigate the feasibility of this application, we have built a prototype HD teleconference system that uses ATM networks. The prototype system consists of a large screen display (4.8 m x 1.5 m), an HDTV CODEC, and a sound localizer. The system achieves a reality-rich environment during tele-conversation. Users can communicate through the system as if they are talking face-to-face even though they may actually be widely separated. In addition to the visual communication environment, group teleconferencing software using a LAN-to-LAN connection has also been implemented. This software provides a shared chalkboard environment for group collaboration. After testing the prototype, we conclude that high-definition visual telecommunication has the capability to provide continuous smooth communication and collaboration.
