Pixel-wise Motion Estimation with Spatiotemporal Block Matching

Abstract(in English) Estimating motions in image sequences is important in many areas of image processing, for example, in image segmentation. The conventional block matching generates unreliable motion fields in the sense of true motion in the scene, especially when using a small block size. In this paper we propose to perform motion estimation with matching of spatiotemporal blocks, which are packs of 2D spatial blocks taken from successive frames of an image sequence. Our simulations shows that motion estimation using spatiotemporal block matching is more robust than the 2D approaches and the obtained motion fields can represent the motions in the scene more accurately.
