Multimedia Mobile Satellite Communication by using LEO System : R&D of Next-generation LEO System

Abstract(in English) Next-generation LEO System(NeLS)research center started the research and development of Next-generation LEO System which would provide the global multimedia modile satellite communicaion by using low-earth-orbit satellites. A five-year plan of key technology developments of the multimedia mobile satellite communication began in 1997, together with the feasibility study of NeLS. The key technologies of the NeLS are categorized into four items; the on-board antenna technology, the optical inter-satellite link(ISL)technology, the ISL communication network technology, and the client terminal technology. The experimental systems of these technologies were developed, and evaluated. For the next step, on-board mission equipment will be developed based on these results for the space proof experiment in the future.
