Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The L-band SAR data of JERS-1 satellite indicates that the normalized radar cross section (NRCS) for rice fields in the Ishikari Plains, Hokkaido, Japan, becomes large in summer when the rice grows and in winter when the rice fields are covered with snow. Analysis reveals that, at L-band, NRCS for snow covered field can become large because of (1) the change of wave number in snow and (2) the refraction of radio wave in snow. The small perturbation method is adopted for the analysis, which shows that NRCS for snow covered field depends strongly on the density of snow, the water content of snow, and the water content of soil.
