Abstract(in English) This paper proposes a statistical multiplexer for an ATM satellite on-board switch. The ATM satellite on-board switch is a key component to realize a multimedia satellite communication system. The ATM switch to be mounted on a satellite is required to directly accommodate many customers with various channel bit rates, should not consume much electrical power and should not radiate much heat. To achieve these requirements, the statistical multiplexing function is evolved taking account of the characteristic of the satellite communication that the amount of the input channel bit rates of the ATM switch is limited to usable frequency band width for satellite uplink channel. At first, this paper proposes a configuration of the statistical multiplexer. And then it shows by traffic simulation that the configuration is feasible from the view points of cell delay, cell delay variation characteristics and required buffer size.
