Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Abstract A converging rod lens with the sech-index distribution has some unique features that cannot be achieved with uniform lenses.The.particular feature is that the former has significantly smaller aberrations than the latter. This constant-thickness lens may be realized either as a short cylinder or as a rectangular slab of dielectric material. In this report fundamental characteristics of these lenses derived from the theory of geometrical optics are described in considerable detail. Then the performance deterioration induced by deviation from the desired refractive-index distribution and off-focus,off-axis incidence is studied, and presented in the form of diagrams.
