Trellis Coded Overlapping Multi-pulse Pulse Position Modulation in Optical Direct-Detection Channel

Abstract(in English) In optical direct-detection channel,multi-pulse pulse position modulation(MPPM)receives much attention,because MPPM can achieve higher capacity and cutoff rate than on-off keying(OOK)or PPM,and, in addition,MPPM can reduce the transmission bandwidth to about half that of PPM at the same transmission efficiency.In optical direct-detection channel,coding is needed to reduce the average transmitter power.For MPPM,convolutional and Reed-Solomon(RS)codes are applied.On the other hand,recently,trellis coded modulation receives much attention in which coding is combined with modulation without bandwidth expansion and coding gain is achieved. In this paper,we propose trellis coded overlapping MPPM(OMPPM)in which multiple pulse positions per pulsewidth are allowed.We define the number of nonoverlapped pulsed chips as a distance,and then we partition the OMPPM signals.From the theoretical analysis, we show that the proposed system can achieve the large coding gain over uncoded MPPM in optical direct-detection channel.
