Signal Transmission Performance of a Multimedia Satellite Communications System

Abstract(in English) Recently, the application of computer communications such as internet services have become popular and the number of users accessing various servers have increased drastically. Most of users access the multimedia communication services via a public switched telephone network (PSTN) or ISDN, and high speed network access circuits are desired. On the other hand, satellite communications have enough bandwidth to easily transmit large amounts of information to multiple points simultaneousuly. Therefore, NTT has developed a multimedia interactive satellite communications system, combining high-speed satellite circuits for the backward link and low-speed terrestrial circuits for the forward link. This paper describes the system configurations and transmission performance employing communication satellite N-STAR. This system achieves an economical receiver by applying CS digital satellite broadcasting system technologies and a high speed communication link of the approximately 30 Mbit/s per transponder.
