Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Languages generally have characteristics in every genre. In this study, we analyze Americam writings from a metrical linguistical viewpoint. As a result, it has become possible to identify the genres such as journalism, text books, and literary works.Frequency characteristics of character-appearance and word-appearance of each material are investigated, which are subsequently approximated by an exponential function:y = c・exp(-bx).The values of both coefficients b and c of this function are important to identify the genres.Furthermore, these values being converted into the appropriate membership functions as fuzzy sets, the degree of a genre is educed by fuzzy reasoning. Not only has this study made the identification of genres of English materials, but also it would be a good guide in selecting teaching materials.
