Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) When it come to the Japanese language, what makes the actual situation real dificult is to learn how to master polite expressions properly in situations which are not all that simple. For there are multiple relations among people in conversations. Every nation has a way to differentiate those relations one way or another. But in Japan, the way as far as the language is concerned, the matter is complicated. It is important to determine which relation is superior in the situation of utterance. We have to take all sorts of things from a scene where the conversation is taking place, persons involved, and to subjects talked into consideration. In this paper, I will discuss a mechanism of determining the level of polite expressions, which is one of the main parts of intelligent CAI system for learning how to use appropriate polite expressions.
