Abstract(in English) Japanese language teaching programgs preparing exchange students who have come to Japan with no prior knowledge of the language to do regular course-work in Japanese universities often use the direct Japanese-only method,following a structural syllabus building up progressively more complex sentence structures and vocabulary. However,in order to efficiently meet the needs og exchange students of recent times,who show great divergence in country of origin,background in learning language,and field of interest,and whose rate of progress in learning Japanese varies greatly from individual to individual.This center has begun developing a "Hyper-media self-learning system"using personal computers.Among the chief characteristics of Hyper-media,the integration of various media,interactiveness with the student,and the extension of channels of information are powerful weapons in the teaching of Japanese,but it has proved to be unrealistic to make thesweeping claim that these make it possible to completely use an unstructured method even at the beginning level.However,to admit this is also assert that the structural syllabus with its relative lack of effectiveness,is unnecesary in all but a few portions of the basic stage.
