Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper presents a sign-post system for the visually impaired using ultrasonic wave. The sigh-post consists of a transmitter and a hand held receiver. The transmitter is mounted close to the landmark that a usually impaired person should recognize, and the receiver is carried by the walker. In this system the frequency modulated (FM) ultrasonic wave is used for the transmission of environmental information to improve the performance of the amplitude modulated (AM) system that we proposed. Furthermore, combining the proposed sign-posts and the walking navigation system for the visually impaired provides the improvement of the reliability and the safety of the navigation system. As a result of some walking experiments, it is clear that the proposed sign-post is useful for the navigation system for the visually impaired.
