A Study on Q-switching of CO_2 Laser pumped Submillimeter Wave Lasers using a Photo-excited Silicon Substrate

Abstract(in English) Generarion of free carriers (electron-hole pairs) in semiconductors irradiated with short laser pulses leads to a rapid change in the complex refractive index of semiconductors, if the photon energy exceeds the band gap energy of semiconductors. By controlling the laser-produced free carrier density, reflectance and transmittance of semiconductors for the submillimeter wave (SMMW) radiation can be varied. As an application of this modulation technique, we use a high resistivity silicon plate as one of the mirrors in the cavity of a CO_2 laser pumped submillimeter wave laser to generate Q-switched SMMW pulses. The experimental results are shown in this paper.
