Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It has been a dream of human being that a machine is able to talk with us. The study of automatic speech recognition (ASR) has been one of the most important study areas since the development of a computer. By the early 80's, the knowledge due to the scientific study of hearings and speech were utilized, or at least considered very important to realize ASR. Nowadays, those who are participating the research and the development of ASR, have little interest in the scientific study. It seems that they believe the improvement of the ASR's performance depends mostly on the increasing computational power. However, the human ability of recognition is far more than the machines ability in the state of art. It is still important to learn about the difference between human performance and machine's one. In this report, the relationship between the study of speech and hearings and that of ASR in the past is briefly summarized, and then the relationship in the future is discussed. Secondly the feelings of interpersonal communications between humans and machines are discussed to realize a natural dialogue between them.
