Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Comprehension and production of spoken and written words are affected by various word attributes such as word frequcy, familiarity, and imageability(subjective ratings of the ease eith which the referent of a word evokes its mental image). This study intends to rate imageability for a large number of aurally and visually presented Japanese words. The correlation coefficient between visual and auditory ratings is very high(r=.9), and these imageability ratings are highly correlated with the familiarity ratings(r=.7-.8). Despite the high correlation between familiarity and imageability, there are a considerable number of words with high-familiarity and low-imageability score such as "経済"(economy)and those with low-familiarity and high-imageability score(e.g. , "巻尺", tape measure). These results suggest that imageability and familiarity may reflect different aspects of word attributes.
