Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Comprehension and production of spoken and written words are affected by various word attributes such as word frequcy, familiarity, and imageability(subjective ratings of the ease eith which the referent of a word evokes its mental image). This study intends to rate imageability for a large number of aurally and visually presented Japanese words. The correlation coefficient between visual and auditory ratings is very high(r=.9), and these imageability ratings are highly correlated with the familiarity ratings(r=.7-.8). Despite the high correlation between familiarity and imageability, there are a considerable number of words with high-familiarity and low-imageability score such as "経済"(economy)and those with low-familiarity and high-imageability score(e.g. , "巻尺", tape measure). These results suggest that imageability and familiarity may reflect different aspects of word attributes. |
