Lexical Properties of Japanese, "Nihongo-no Goitokusei" : Significance and Problems

Abstract(in English) Databases of lexical properties of Japanese words and characters were developed. The database, Nihongo-no Goitokusei(Lexical Properties of Japanese), consists of seven volumes. Volumes 1 through 6 [ref's 1-6]include subjective rating data for word familiarity and orthographic plausibility for 80, 000 words in the Shinmeikai Japanese Dictionary[ref 7], as well as character familiarity ratings and character complexity ratings for 6, 847 characters in the Japanese Industrial Standard list(JIS X 0208-1990)[ref 8]. The seventh volume[ref 9]contains objective count data of word frequency and character frequency in the Asahi Newspaper over 14 years(from 1985 to 1998). In this paper, the lexical properties and their interrelations in the database will be introduced, and the significance and problems of the database will be discussed.
