Abstract(in English)	Three models of adult second language(L2)acquisition based on Chomsky's(1965, 1981)Universal Grammer(UG)are discussed referring to Japanese adult L2 English learners' left branch(LB)violations(Ross 1986). English and Japanese have different LB(violation)patterns. Japanese adult L2 English learners at lower proficiency levels are often observed to show LB violations that coincides neither with their target language(English)nor with their L1(Japanese). This observation does not support the hypothesis that transfer from their L1 manifests in their L2 grammar because UG is not available to adult learners.
