Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Autism is characterized by a developmental disorder of social interaction, communication, and language. Cerebellar abnormality in autism has been shown consistently from autopsy and MRI studies. Our recent MRI study with careful methodologic designs identified two subgroup of autistic patients, that is, hypoplasia and hyperplasia of cerebellar vermian lobules VI-VII. On the other hand, new functional neuroimaging technology enables us to conduct a direct investigation of neural correlates of impaired attention and cognition in autism. Furthermore, an increase of findings of possible cerebellar involvement in human non-motor cognition seems to stimulate a development of new'Comprehensive Neuropsychology', not restricted to cerebral pathology.
