Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This work investigates what type of information is utilized at what stage of on-line language processing. We will restrict our discussion to the thematic role information in the syntactic parsing. In order to examine whether or not this type of information can guide the initial syntactic processing, we have conducted an eye movement experiment in which the aim is to observe language processing of the garden path sentences in English. The results in the experiment revealed that the animacy-based thematic role interpretation preference immediately exerts an influence on the initial syntactic analysis.
