Recognition of Metaphorical Relation between Words by Statistical Approach

Abstract(in English) In this paper, we propose a computational model to recognize metaphorical expressions based on a statistical method. In this model, we utilize knowledge base instead of concept description which is used in prototype model proposed by Smith(1988)and Iwayama(1991). This knowledge base system is automatically generated from co-occurrence relations extracted from newspaper articles. We also introduce viewpoint of movement expression lexicalized by a verb in order to characterize a salience feature of a metaphorical expression. We have conducted experiments to evaluate our model using 33 sentences which include metaphorical expressions. We utilized 80, 000 sentences of newspaper article to develop knowledge base.
