Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) These days as computers spread, mathematical and quantitative studies of languages have been increasingly carried on. In this study, we try to enduce the stylistical features of representative English newspapers of Japan, the United States and the United Kingdom. Frequency characteristics of character-appearance and word-appearance are investigated using a computer, which are approximated by an exponential function:y=c・exp(-bx). As a result, as for character-appearance, the values of coefficient b and c of an American newspaper are close to those of TIME and Newsweek, while Japanese and British newspapers have characteristics close to those of English textbooks for junior and senior high schools in Japan. On the other hand, in the case of word-appearrance, an English newspaper in Japan rather than that in Britain has features closer to TIME.
