Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The Present study examined the Maturation Hypothesis proposed in Borer and Wexler (1987). The particular construction explored is Japanese direct passives and indirect passives. The Hypothesis predicts that direct passives which include 'A-chain' are acquired later than indirect passives which do not include 'A-chain.' Three experiments were conducted: Experiment I on production and Experiments II and III on comprehension. Passives in the published naturalistic speeches were also investigated. The results demonstrate, contrary to the prediction, that direct passives are acquired earlier than indirect passives. It is pointed out that the Hypothesis cannot be maintained as it is, and also that more studies on the structure of Japanese passives are in need.
