Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper presents the spectacular progress of recognition methods for hand-printed Kanji characters. Researches in handprinted Kanji recognition began with stroke analysis method and turned to feature matching method in a while. Many feature extraction methods have been proposed. On the other hand, researches based on pattern matching method have been accomplished. From these researches, it is shown that directional features are quite effective to recognize handprinted Kanji characters. Many kinds of researches are also continued. However, present recognition methods are only the technique of "select a category". Researches from the thread of "understand a character" are necessary in future.
