Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Shirai(2000) claims that the semantics of Japanese imperfective aspectual maeker -teiru is determined by the interaction between situation aspect and viewpoint aspect, based on the two component theory proposed by Smith(1997), and that the duration is the primary factor that determines whether progressive or resultative meaning is obtained. This paper examines the validity of Shirai's system by analyzing 250 tokens -teiru that appeared in a conversational corpus.
