Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In order to investigate the effect of the first language on perception of speech segments in a second language, perception ability of American English (AE) /r/ and /l/ was compared between Korean and Japanese listeners. A series of three perception experiments demonstrated that the two language groups varied in performance across different phonetic environments when identifying AE /r/ and /l/. To investigate possible sources of the pattern of difficulties, listeners were asked to select the native category to which each AE /r/ or /l/ was most similiar to, and to rate its category goodness on a 7-point scale. The pattern of assimilation was found to differ between the two languages and across phonetic environments, in ways that predicted the difficulties in identification performance
