Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Previous studies have explored the influences of palatal bar position on the maxillary palateon "difficulty" in pronunciation. We have been successful in identifying characteristics of consonants which are difficult to pronounce, including the differing length of time neededto produce the sound and the extended time of constriction. In this study, three healthy subjects were asked to pronounce a phrase with multiple /C/ sounds while fitted with three artificial palates with central maxillary palatal bars of differing thicknesses and widths. The effect of the palatal bar dimensions on the three "difficult" /C/ sounds and their preceding and following vowels and consonants were recorded through simultaneous electro-palatograms and sound spectrographs.
