Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Theoretical third harmonic distortion ratio (THD) of the contact current due to electron tunnel effect through the thin film between the contact members is derived applying Simmons formula of the tunnel current. Experiments using contacts of Au-Ni alloy resulted in that high contact resistances (CR) create high THDs as the derived theory may indicate. In addition, major physical parameters of the tunnel film (film thickness and work function) can・be estimated by making use of the experimental data of THD and CR. Practical applications of this theory are; 1) The discovery of a third harmonic is a kind of proof that a thin insulating film exists between the contact members. 2) Nonlinear characteristics of CR at allied DC voltage may be translated into THD by this theory without taking harmonic measurements.
