Development of a compact NIR sugar-measuring instrument

Abstract(in English) In this study, we developed a compact instrument by near infrared spectroscopy(NIRS)for measuring the sugar content of apples, and the performance was tested. The instrument consists of a light source, a polychromator, a wave-guide(optical fiber bundle)and a data processing unit. The performance was examined at full width at half maximum(FWHM)of the spectrum. The difference in the absorption of quartz and plastic fibers in the near infrared was also compared. We tested the performance of the compact NIR instrument in determining the sugar content of apples. The sugar content measurements were confirmed by a high Brix correlation, and the calibration showed the accuracy of the instrument in practice. Moreover, this sagar-measuring instrument has been developed for commercial sale and use.
