Development and Properties of Polyimide Optical Waveplate

Abstract(in English) In-plane birefringence(△ n)of polyimide film is generated by uni axial drawing during curing.The A n of PMDA, TFDB having a rigid structure can be controlled between 0.03 and 0.19 by varying final curing temperature.A half-waveplate at 1.55 ptm was prepared using PMDA/TFDB.It is only 14.51im thick which is 6.3 times as thin as quarts waveplate.The retardation of the polyimide was retained after annealing at 350℃ for Ih.A polyimide waveplate was tough and flexible,and it was inserted into a groove formed in a silica- based planer lightwave circuits(PLC)as a TE/TM polarization mode converter.The polarization dependence of PLC was eliminated,and the excess loss due to the waveplate insertion was 0.26dB,which is less than 1/15 of that a quartz waveplate.
