High strength and low loss fusion splicing between silica-based waveguides and optical fibers

Abstract(in English) A CO_2 laser fusion splicing between silica-based waveguides and optical fibers was investigated.Misalignment and core-distortion induced by differences of heat capacity and softening temperature between silica-based waveguides and optical fibers are reduced by optimizing the offset of irradiating position and the power density of the CO_2 laser light.Average splice loss of 0.15 dB and average tensile strength of 18 N were reproducibily realized. Observation of fracture surfaces indicates that the causes of low strength are due to the localized stress concentration caused by angled connections between silica-based waveguides and optical fibers or due to micro cracks of the optical fibers.
