Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A reduction method of amplified spontaneous emission(ASE)noise from erbium-doped fiber amplifiers was proposed by using nonlinear optical switching of a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror(NALM).The technique was successfully applied to the soliton transmission experiment,in which the ASE from concatenated erbium-doped fiber amplifiers in a 10 Gbit, s - 500 km soliton transmission system has been successfully reduced. The ratio of the signal peak to ASE was improved form 17:1 to 25:1.The chirp characteristics of the output pulse from the NALM were also discussed. It is shown that although chirp occurs inevitably in this nonlinear switching, almost transform-limited pulse can be obtained as long as the nonlinear phase difference in the NALM is kept below 0.3π rad.
