Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In Electric contacts, downsizing high reliability and long life time have been required recently. Arcs must be broken at shorter contact gap to make small relays. Arc discharges were generated in the air in slowly opening Pd and Ag contacts. In this paper, the voltages between contacts measured by an digital oscilloscope and the video images of arcs are shown, and the shield effect on the arc is discussed. Arcs might be broken at shorter gap due to the shield effect that the shield area of higher resistance and temperature spread widely just before arc's fireing at slowly opening contacts. In Pd contacts, arcs broke at short gap. In Ag contacts, arcs broke at short gap in contacts with longer electrode length from the arc spot to the holder. Arc durations were about 100 micro-secod. However, arcs broke at longer gap in Ag contacts with shorter electrode length, and arc durations were about 10 second.
