Study of fiber physical contact optical connector

Abstract(in English) A high-performance, high-density, and low cost optical fiber connector is a key technology for the improvement of the optical fiber network. We studied a multiple fiber physical contact (FPC) optical connector utilizing optical fiber elastic force for physical contact (PC). The 8-fiber FPC connector is a small size of 7×14×3 mm and low cost with the injection-molding. The FPC connector realizes PC between cleaved optical fibers and improves a return loss and reduced the assembly cost. The prototype has high optical performance. The insertion and return losses were 0.11 dB and 61.7 dB in average. The optical performance was stable under temperature change and connection repetition.
