Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The walking rhythm is known to show phase-shift or "resetting" in response to external perturbations. We tried to elucidate the functional roles of the phase resetting possibly used for the neural control of locomotion. To this end, a system with a double pendulum as a simplified model of the locomotor control was employed and analyzed in detail. An essential assumption used in our model construction was that the locomotion can be modeled by a dynamical system that is capable of exhibiting dynamic stability. In this model, a movement corresponding to the normal steady-state walking may be realized as a stable limit cycle solution of the system. Unexpected external perturbations applied to the system can push the state point of the system away from its limit cycle, either outside or inside the basin of attraction of the limit cycle. Our mathematical analyses of the model suggested the following two functional roles of the phase resetting: (1) An appropriate amount of the phase resetting alone, for a given perturbation, can move the system's state point outside the basin of attraction of the limit cycle back to inside. (2) It can also reduce the time necessary for the state point away from the limit cycle to return back to it. These functions can be rephrased as follows: A given perturbation applied during a normal steady-state walking may induce transient changes in the motion trajectory, such as "stumbling and corrective" reaction, or may even result in critical changes such as falling. For such a perturbation, an appropriate amount of the phase resetting of the walking rhythm can shorten the transient duration needed for reestablishing the original steady-state walking, and can also prevent the walker from falling.
