Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Conventional criteria for scoring sleep stages have empirically been designed, which has been noticed that they do not reflect actual state-dependent changes in dynamics of polygraphic signals. In this study, in order to see interaction between neural mechanisms underlying polygraphic events characterizing the respective sleep stages, we investigated the dynamics of polygraphic signals during transitions between rapid eye movement sleep(REM)and non-REM sleep(NREM). As a result, we found that order of changes in dynamics of polygraphic signals during the transition from REM to NREM was almost reversed for that from NREM to REM. In addition, occurrence of rapid eye movements was shown to be anti-correlated with β-band EEG activity. These findings suggest hierarchical relationship between the neural mechanisms underlying change in sleep states.
