Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | We investigated the temporal relationship between hippocampal theta waves and PGO waves during REM sleep which presumablely relates to the higher-order brain functions. We found that the PGO waves phaselocked to the hippocampal theta waves. In order to clarify the phase-locking mechanism, auditory stimuli were employed to elicit PGO waves (PGO_E) at an arbitray phase in reference to the theta wave. As a result, the occurrence probability of PGO_E in response to the stimulus was found to depend on the hippocampal theta wave rhythm. These results suggest the mechanism that the potine tegmentum neurons, generator of PGO waves, are driven by the hippocampal theta wave rhythm and auditory afferent inputs. |
