Abstract(in English) | We measured whole brain actibities using a 204ch MEG system and compared the responses obtained in two tasks, in order to locate the areas participating in the processing of visual words, especially the phonological processing. In the word categorization task, subjects were instructed to judge quickly whether a presented noun word was abstract or concrete. In the composition task, meaningless letter strings were presented and subjects composed a meaningful word by changing spelling order covertly. The MEG responses lasted longer in the composition task than the categorization. Additional activities were found in the composition task in the left supramarginal gyrus and in the bilateral anterior temporal lobe. The word composition task strongly requires phonological manipulation accompanied by verbal working memory, suggesting that the left supramarginal area may be involved in memory-related phonological processing. |
