Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The effects of locally disturbed flows on intimal thickening was studied by creating an axisymmetric constriction on common carotid arteries of the rabbit fed on cholesterol-rich diet. It was found that intimal thickening occurred only in a restricted region which extended from the summit of the constriction to the distal end of the stenosis. Furthermore, by comparing the results with the results of the calculation of blood flow and transport of low density lipoprotein (LDL) in an artery with an axisymmetric stenosis, it was found that the site of the intimal thickening well corresponded to the region where wall shear stress was relatively low and surface concentration of LDL was locally elevated.
