Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The pupillary light reflex (PLR) which mainly controls the amount of incident light on the retina has been an object of bioengineering study as a typical involuntary neuro-control system. In this study, a new mathematical model of the PLR is proposed by considering the muscular physio1ogical knowledge. The proposed model has two subsystems. One is the retina and the central nervous system (RCNS) generating nervous signals as responses to light stimuli, and the other one is the muscle plant driven by the signal. Sphincter and dilator muscles in the muscle plant were described using a viscoelastic model, which incorporates the internal load property to precisely reflect the muscular dynamics. The changes in response property of the RCNS depending on light intensity was formulated. As a result, the new model can represent the static characteristic of the PLR and the flash responses to various light intensity.
