Abstract(in English) Extracted teeth used for cutting training of dental students are now difficult to be obtained due to the popularity of oral hygiene. To cope with such circumstance, a tooth-cutting simulator was developed in an attempt to compensate for actual cutting traintng. This virtual reality-based system, however, is still very expensive, thus restricting applications in dental school. To eliminate such restriction, we developed a personal computer-based simulator, Decs/1, which enables us to practice the preparation of dental cavities on a real-time basis. In order to achieve real-time cutting, we developed a composite tooth model consisting of a voxel data and a surface data merely describing a prepared portion. The partial surface model can be updated and visualized on a real-time basis, while time-consuming updating of the solidmodel is decided to be carricd out only when required. Through experiments of a typical cavity preparation using Decs/1, the system was verified to be effective for the training of the design and preparation of dental cavities.
