Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Masticatory or bite forces applied to the teeth are known to generate compressive forces in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which is referred to as "TMJ loading". Since excessive TMJ loading deteriorates articular functions, it is considered to be controlled, to a certain extend, by the stomatognathic system. In an attempt to clarify this control mechanism, we have been analysing the controllability of TMJ loading by the coordinative activities of the masticatory muscles, employing a static two-dimensional model including a rigid-body spring model (RBSM) of the articular disk. This paper then analyzed functions of the activation of the posterior temporalis and digastric muscles during biting in the control of TMJ loading. Consequently, the activation of the posterior temporalis muscle was verified to reduce the minimum TMJ-loading, while that of the digastric muscle was verified to increase TMJ loading, under the condition that the bite force and the force vector of the lateral pterygoid muscle are both constant.
