Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Respiration, mastication, and swallowing are important movements to maintain a homeostasis in animals and humans. Although each movement is controlled by each pattern generator in the brain stem, there are some couplings between respiration, mastication and swallowing. In the present study, we investigate a possibility that the couplings are modified by posture. One example of the present results indicate that in a sitting posture swallowing equally begins at the inspratory and expiratory phases except around the time at which a switching occurs from inspiration to expiration, whereas in a supine posture that begins frequently immediately after the switching. We speculate that the couplings between three movements changes with posture to compensate for the alterations in the mechanical properties of the muscles and organs in the body.
