Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We are researching a location guidance method that offers location information to the visually impaired using a portable GPS(Global Positioning System)receiver system.Tested within the Niigata University campus, the original system developed three years ago, with only on GPS receiver and speech synthesizer output, gave maximum average errors of 64 m to the location. For the improved system, reported in the paper,we combined a magnetic azimuth sensor with the GPS sensor in the original system to reduce the error to the nearest orthogonally intersecting road. Using circular search, direction correction and movement estimation, the maximum average error was reduced to 46 m.This paper describes the measuring method and experiment results.
