Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Cold shivering in six chronic spinal dogs was studied using an electromyography (EMG).In the forequarters,EMG activities in the form of grouping discharges(GDs) accompanied with visible tremor (VT) were observed at the ambient temperature of 15℃ in all the do gs.In the hindquarters, the GDs with VT were observed at 3℃ in one dog.Although GDs with VT were never induced by cold eposure in the remainders,GDs without VT were produced by additional mechanical stimuli to the skin of the hindquarters. In all cases, the frequency of cold shivering(GDs) in the hindquarters was smaller than that in the forequarter. These results indicate that the isolated spinal cord is responsible for cold shivering, while its excitability to cold exposure in less than that of the spinal cord governed by the supraspinal center.
