| Abstract(in English) | A long term recording of a single mesencephalic reticular formation(MRF) neuron was successfully carried out both during natural sleep-wakefulness and after the administrations of nicotinic antagonist,mecamylamine(0.6mg, kg),and muscarinic antagonist,atropine sulfate(1.0mg/kg).Although mecamylamine did abolish PGO-waves,no substantial change in the 1/f spectral characteristic of the single MRF neuronal activity during REM sleep was observed.Atropine sulfate completely eliminnated the 1/f fluctuations in the activity during initial 2 hrs after the administration.The restoration of the 1/f fluctuations was observed during REM-sleep-like states which appeared 2 hrs after the administration,although the mean discharge rate was deeply suppressed.These results support the idea that 1/f fluctuation in the single MRF neuronal activity during REM sleep depends on a muscarinic effect of acetylcholine. |
