Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Masticatory and biting forces applied to the teeth are known to generate compressive forces in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which is referred to as "the temporomandibular joint loading". Since excessive loading is believed to deteriorate TMJ functions, TMJ loading is considered to be controlled, to a certain extent, by the stomatognathic system. In an attempt to clarify this control mechanism, we analyzed the relationship between TMJ loading and the activities of the masticatory muscles. For this analysis, we employed a two-dimensional static jaw-model, which incorporates four muscles: 1) the masseter including the internal pterygoid; 2)the anterior portion of the temporalis; and 3) the lateral pterygoid, all muscles of which function principally during biting. A static equilibrium analysis clarified that TMJ loading can be minimized when the loading vector points at a certain direction, determined only by individual morphological factors. This kinetically optimum direction of TMJ loading fully corresponded to the anatomically optimum one. It should be noted that this optimum direction was absolutely independent to the activities of the lateral pterygoid and the direction of biting. Consequently, TMJ loading can be considered to be controllable by coordinative activities of the masseter and the anterior portion of the temporalis.
